Document Evolution

I like to draw an analogy between the evolution of the Document and that the Web is undergoing.

The following diagram illustrates some of the distinct characteristics I can see for the document in its various stages: 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.

Document Evolution chart

The document is evolving from being propietary and opaque, to being open and structured. It is increasingly secure, with finer-grained security being available at the section or even lower levels. It will become self-aware, self-enriching, becoming a “mash-up” of various sources. It will be increasingly aware of the workflow it is following, and of its own lifecycle. And it will have a life of itself, continuing to evolve online and offline.

Where are your document processes on the Document Evolution chart ?

Hey… I don’t know if you’ve been making changes, but your pages aren’t displaying correctly for me. The margins look all screwed up. Everything was working the other day. I don’t know if it’s something on my computer or if you’ve made a change… Just thought you might want to look at it. Thanks! Ezra Quilliam
