The (past and) Future of electronic paper

A very interesting interview with Nick Sheridon, the inventor of electronic paper, on the history of the e-paper. He describes how the concept was first invented in the Xerox PARC labs… about 35 years ago ! and how it evolved over time.

To him, the biggest impediment to epaper mass adoption is the fact that “No technology is sufficiently paper-like, yet”. Couldn’t agree more – the Kindle, or the Irex Iliad, are not as easy to use as a rollable sheet of paper. The killer app will be color.

So a bit of patience is certainly required - electronic paper will not probably not replace standard paper overnight. Nick predicts 2012 will see e-paper become a real mass market, although he adds “the pocket document reader will take a little longer”.

Can e-Paper be scanned? What kind of impact will e-Paper have on the business world?

What is the stance of Xerox to these types of technology?
