I am in charge of ingesting smarter document technologies into Xerox, by taking innovative, thought leading ideas and applying them to real world applications. My group has a unique position between Xerox Research which I originate from, and our services operations, field and sales people. Our mission is to make smarter document management pervasive to all of Xerox\'s services and realize our vision of the document of the future.

Hmm, not answer to Johan's question... The funny thing is that I triggered on 'living documents' from a whole different perspective. I was thinking about 'living documents' in the sense that documents classify themselves, 'know' which workflow they should be in, etc. Living documents in the context of live systems, complex systems.

Looks like eReaders are going to be the biggest buzz on Black Friday (the big Thanksgiving vacation shopping day in the US). Any manufacturer willing to break the USD 100 barrier yet? The USD 200 barrier has been breached but a less than USD 100 price will make it a very attractive gift item this holiday season.
Maybe I am too optimistic, perhaps one more year before the USD 100 barrier is breached.

Francois, an interesting question is: Is an automatic generated document, using mashups to retrieve the lastest actual data, still a document? Or is it a new presentation of an application GUI? Or do both worlds come together?

Some definitions from the web:

"In the PC world, the term was originally used for a file created with a word processor. In addition to text, documents can contain graphics, charts, and other objects"

"a piece of paper that provides an official record of something"

"A document is a bounded physical representation of body of information designed with the capacity (and usually intent) to communicate. A document may manifest symbolic, diagrammatic or sensory-representational information. To document is to produce a document artifact by collecting and representing information. In prototypical usage, a document is understood as a paper artifact, containing information in the form of ink marks. Increasingly documents are also understood as digital artifacts. WIKIPEDIA"

Common: Documents use a formatting structure to combine selected data into information to communicate or to record, e.g. freeze information, so it can be used for evidence.

Do living documents freeze the information, e.g. can be track back all the versions?

Great comment Phil. The document is much more than paper - video, audio, multimedia, virtual, augmented... I should make that clearer.

As for Wistia, this is a very interesting company, competing head to head with Cisco and Google. Did you check Veodia also? I happen to know their CEO, Guillaume Cohen, well. You should also check their screenjelly product, for recording your screen and disseminating it via email or tweets. pretty awesome.

I should probably blog about video document technologies in Web 2.0... Too much to do, too little time :-)

I think it would be helpful to broaden the definition of "document" to include all digital media including video, audio, slide decks, and etc. Support for internal workflow is very important but in Web 2.0 world we need to consider ways in which media can be outward facing to customers. This includes support for conversations, folksonomy tagging, semantic search and the use of embed tags. One interesting SaaS vendor is Wistia which I find intriguing. do you know of any others of similar type?

I view this as another step in Xerox's transformation from a "Document Company" to a "Business Process Company". A logical derivation from the fact that documents are not just the "ends" but also the "means" in any business transaction.
The big profits now lie in delivering the process ("means") rather than just the documents("ends") .
